Here are some answers to commonly asked questions that may help

Why choose Wiser Women’s Health?

Simply put, we have the education, experience and knowledge to combine the best of modern functional medicine and nutrition with the time tested modality of Chinese medicine for optimum results. We do our research, make our recommendations (backed by data and clinical results), and work with you in a collaborative way, without being demanding or forceful.

Regarding fertility (our favorite specialty for the past 20 years) we have worked with hundreds of patients alongside Austin’s premier Reproductive Endocrinologists and OBGYNs to help patients achieve their goal of growing a healthy family.

How do you compare to other fertility acupuncture practices?

First, we offer much more than acupuncture to our fertility patients. Since coming to central Texas as Axis Acupuncture in 2004, we honed our skills as one of the first acupuncture practices in Austin treating fertility. We have specialized training from the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, and we have worked with hundreds of patients alongside Austin’s premier Reproductive Endocrinologists and OBGYNs to help patients achieve their goal of growing a healthy family.

Second, a Masters Degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine uniquely positions Wiser Women’s Health to help your body help itself prepare for a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. Has your fertility doctor strictly prohibited you from taking Chinese herbs? No problem! We have the expertise to work with your nutrition and lifestyle to support you in a specific way that compliments assisted reproductive treatments like IVF and IUI.

And finally, we combine these two modalities to best suit your needs as we collaborate in your care.

What is Functional Medicine?

It’s defined by the Institute for Functional Medicine (ifm.org) as a biological systems-based approach to health and healing that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease and imbalance. One condition may have multiple contributing causes (e.g. depression caused by a combinations of low thyroid function, vitamin D deficiency, insulin resistance, omega 3 deficiency), just as one cause may lead to many conditions (e.g. inflammation contributing to depression, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, heart disease).

What is Chinese Medicine?

Evolving over thousands of years, Chinese medicine is a complete modality that includes aspects like acupuncture, herbal formulas, cupping, moxibustion, tui na, qi gong, and tai chi. It is such an elegant and effective modality in the hands of well-trained practitioners, that it hasn’t had to change much over time. It is based on the concept that a vital life force, called Qi (pronounced “Chee”) flows through the body. Any imbalance in Qi can lead to disease and illness. It correlates beautifully with the tenets of function medicine. Find the root cause and restore balance by working WITH your body, rather than covering up symptoms or forcing your body into submission.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Absolutely not. For the most part, it’s painless. Once in a while you may feel a twinge, but it should resolve almost immediately. Most patients find it quite soothing and may fall asleep during a session. If you’ve had unpleasant experiences with acupuncture, you weren’t in the right place. It doesn’t have to hurt to be beneficial.

Do you take health insurance?

We accept payments through FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and HSA (Health Savings Account) cards. While we don’t participate in any third-party insurance programs at this time. We are happy to provide you a detailed billing summary that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement directly to you. Wiser Women’s Health does not submit medical claims on your behalf.
